Materials Photo Walk/Scavenger Hunt

It's the beginning of the school year here, and scavenger hunts or photo walks provide a hands-on opportunity to introduce technology in a meaningful and engaging way for our Early Years learners.

Digital Literacy Skills Inside and Outside the Classroom

Our Kindergarten students are using the Camera app and Keynote to explore the world around them, capturing images of everyday objects and identifying the materials they are made from. The next step is where they are sorting, labelling, and sharing their findings—building early digital literacy skills while developing their understanding of materials and their properties. The excitement in their discoveries has been fantastic to see!

iPad Expectations

This activity also serves as an opportunity to model and establish expectations for using technology effectively, fostering a culture where iPads are tools for creativity, exploration, and meaningful learning.

Extending the Learning

Inspired by Karen Irwin’s post, this activity introduces the Camera app to Early Years learners. For older students, it can be differentiated to enhance their photography skills - encouraging them to experiment with angles, lighting, editing, and enhancing their photos (see Everyone Can Create Photo for more ideas).

📸 How do you embed technology with Early Years learners? How do you use the Camera app?

I always tell teachers - if you do not know where to start with technology, start with the camera! Such a great introduction to so many soft skills for our youngest learners. Thank you for sharing this activity. I also love your ideas for differentiation depending on comfort level with technology!

This is wonderful, Mary! 🤩 Such a fantastic way to integrate literacy, digital skills, photography and creativity with iPad!

Keynote FTW always, and also, of course, the most important and cross-curricular/age range/subject area app; the Camera!
