Learning with iPad - "Learn it? Teach It" Video Explainers for Math

Context

One of the best ways to solidify understanding is to teach someone else. In this activity, students become content creators by making a short explainer video about a math concept using iPad.

Preparation and Flow

Intro (5m)

Watch a short math explainer video (~1 min). This can be similar to a TikTok-style short-form video.

Discuss: “What makes a good explanation?”

Students choose a topic they’ve learned, for example, the Pythagoras Theorem.

Plan and Record (30m)

Use screen recording while presenting visuals and explaining aloud.

Some tools students can explore

Freeform: A powerful digital canvas where students can write handwritten notes on an infinite canvas.

Screen recording on iPad: Students can screen record themselves using tools like Freeform to explain concepts

Clips: Optionally, students can use a tool like Clips to edit the video. Clips is a simple video editing tool on iPad that allows students to quickly and easily cut, rearrange, and personalize a video.

Share (10m)

Students can share and submit the videos they created.

Possible Extension

Share with a Keynote Presentation

Use Keynote to create a beautiful and professional presentation on the topic. My suggestion, possible extension is to keep creating a repository of videos as a class pertaining to different topics instead. There’s a lot to share just by doing this alone. Rich content, and one way to have students checking each other for accuracy and understanding.
