Learning with iPad - Sketch and Solve Math in Math Notes

Context

Algebra and graphing can feel disconnected from one another. Math Notes on iPad bridges this gap, allowing students to write out equations, instantly graph them, and annotate their thinking in a fluid, intuitive way.

Preparation and Flow

Intro (15m) Demonstrate the capabilities of Math Notes on iPad, a powerful tool to solve algebraic equations, visualize trigonometric equations, and graphs.

Steps:

Open the Notes app

Go to the Math Notes folder and create a new note

Demo:

The italicized values are completion results by iPad.

Completing Equations

Start by writing a simple equation, like “2+3=“ and iPad will automatically complete it with the answer as 5.

2 + 3 = 5

Variables

Extend the concept, create a variable and using it within a simple equation.

a = 32

a x 3 = 96

Diagrams

You can demonstrate using a simple example like the Pythagoras theorem.

Changing Values

Select a number, and you can drag it and set it’s value. This automatically updates all variables that rely on it.

Graphs

Write an equation like y = 2x and when a menu pops up, choose Insert Graph.

With 2 fingers, you can pan and zoom around on the graph and by dragging Apple Pencil on the lines, you can read the exact values.

Multiple Graphs

You can add another graph writing another equation and choose "Add to Existing Graph”

In the following example, variables are used as part of the inserted graph.

Practice and Explore (30m)

Students solve 3+ problems of varying types.

Use Math Notes to sketch graphs, draw diagrams, and explain their process.

Share (10m)

Students share their work with one another to see how each other used Math Notes and diagrams to share.

Optionally, they can export it to PDF, AirDrop, or use AirPlay to share it with the class.

Possible Extension

Organize Notes

Students can organize their notes with folders, tags, and more. They can organize notes by topic as well as use the built-in search bar to search through hand-written notes

Straighten and Refine Handwriting

Students can make handwriting more readable by using the Lasso tool to select text and choosing Straighten or Refine to automatically clean up handwritten content to make it more readable.

Highlight and Draw

Students can highlight important information and draw relevant diagrams or images.

Attach Images and Documents

Students can attach images and documents as part of the Notes document, for example, by taking a photo of a whiteboard or worksheet and bringing it into their notes.

Collaborate on Notes

Students can collaborate with one another on Notes
