Learning with iPad - "Exploring Japan" through Persuasive Writing

Context

In this activity, students take on the role of a persuasive writer within a family travel scenario. Framed around an upcoming trip to Japan, students must choose one real attraction and craft a convincing argument for why the family should visit it. This task encourages students to apply persuasive techniques with a clear purpose and audience, while also developing research skills, cultural awareness, and structured writing. The use of iPads supports independent exploration and digital literacy as students gather information and present their case.

Preparation and Flow

Introduce the Scenario - Tell students they are going on a trip to Japan with their family. They must choose one attraction and write a persuasive essay to convince their family to visit it.

Explore Attractions - Students use Safari to research real places in Japan. They gather key information:

  • What is the attraction?
  • Why is it interesting?
  • Best time to go.
  • How to get there.
  • Who in the family would enjoy it.

Plan the Essay - Students organise their ideas using Notes or Google Docs. They write down their main points and supporting details.

Write the Essay - Students write a persuasive essay using clear structure and persuasive language. They explain their choice and try to convince their reader.

Share (Optional) - Students can read their essays to a partner, small group, or the class. You may hold a friendly vote on the most convincing suggestion.

Possible Extension

Visual Itinerary Poster - Students design a digital poster or brochure for their chosen attraction using Canva or Keynote, including photos, highlights, travel tips, and a short persuasive blurb.

Presentation to the "Family" - Students present their destination pitch to the class as if they’re talking to their real family, using persuasive speaking skills.

Travel Video or Slideshow - Students create a short travel video or voiceover slideshow introducing the attraction, using Clips or iMovie.
