Context
This activity builds spoken fluency, sequencing, and clarity in an engaging and accessible way. By letting students choose their topic, it taps into personal knowledge and confidence while developing essential communication skills. The use of video helps students reflect on tone, pace, and clarity, core components of effective speaking.
Preparation and Flow
Introduction
1. Brainstorm Ideas
Ask students:
“What is something you know how to do really well?”
List ideas on the board.
2. Plan the Steps
Students choose one idea and plan:
What is the activity?
What do you need?
What are the steps?
Who will find this helpful?
3. Practise Speaking
Students practise saying their steps out loud clearly and in order.
Use words like: first, next, then, finally.
4. Record the Video
Use Clips or iMovie to record.
Keep it short (1–2 mins).
Speak clearly and use any materials needed.
5. Share & Reflect
Watch each other’s videos.
Talk about what made the instructions clear or fun.
Possible Extension
Students can apply this activity across subjects by creating “How To” videos for science experiments, math problems, PE routines, or art techniques. The key is the structure and beginning phrases that help to frame the creative process, and language articulation.
