Apple Intelligence - Where is it and what can it do?

This post is mainly from a Keynote that I presented on Apple Intelligence.  As a disclaimer. I have a 9 year old daughter who loves pandas.

As you can see from this slide, there are both hardware and software requirements for Apple Intelligence.

There are lots of ways Apple Intelligence can be used in Pages. You can see in the slide below some of the things that I can do.

You can see in this slide, I already has Apple Intelligence write me a story about a Panda who does't like bamboo. If you highlight some text, you can get Apple Intelligence to help you.

After selection some text, the Apple Intelligence button is active. You can Proofread, Re-Write, make the text more Friendly, more Professional, or make you writing more concise. You can also highlight a document and Summarize it, get Key Points, Create a List, or even get a Table. You can also Compose with or without ChatGPT depending on your settings.

I chose to compose with ChatGPT by clicking on the Compse.

Apple Intelligence wrote me a story about a panda and I wanted an image. So I asked for a image of a panda living in the mountains.

Once the image is created you can see that it even gave the panda a name, based on the text that I highlighted.

From the image created with the compose tool, I can either replace something I have or Copy so that I can paste the selection where I want. I chose to Copy

I pasted the image into my text to give the story some imagery

Writing tool can also be used with Mail. Many of the same features as Pages are available.

You can see here I composed an email with some mistakes on purpose.

By selecting the tool bar by dismissing the keyboard you have access to Writing Tools

I chose to proofread and you can see that there are some errors Apple Intelligence found.

You can see that I typed "your" rather than you, which it fixed. However, I wanted "Deeper", which Apple Intelligence suggested "Deep". This is a prime example that although AI is very helpful, there is still the human factor to check the work.

An important feature of the Writing Tools is to be able to change the tone of an email. I chose to make the email sound more professional.

After making the email more professional, I decided to make lengthen the email using the Writing Tools.

On either the iPhone or iPad, you can use the Image Wand in Notes. In this slide you can see I started with a blank iPhone Notes page. I then wrote "Panda" with a stylus, but you could use your finger. I then selected the Image Wand (circled in yellow) and circled the word panda on the screen.

You can see on the image of the left you will see the Image Wand working. Sometimes it doesn't know what you are asking for so you can type in to help the Apple Intelligence. The middle image is what was generated, however, you can see in the image to the right, I that wanted add something. You can also click on the plus button (+) next the text field to get some different style options.

You can see when you click on the style option, you can choose from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. You can see the Illustration and Sketch generations below.

You see in below the orignial generation, and the animation version .

Once you have your generated image with Image Wand, if you click on the three dots (...) you will get a menu to copy, share or save image (to photos).

You can also draw images and have the Image Wand create an image for you. I draw a rough house with a chimney, front door and side windows. It asked me for some clarification what I wanted and I typed "house." You can see the image on the right is what it created for me.

There are also Apple Intelligence working with your Mail Account.

The Mail app has several Apple Intelligence Filters - Primary, Transactions, Updates, Promotions, and All Mail. You can see below that the left image is All Mail, middle Primary, and right image is Transactions

In the image below you can see on the left promotions and right updates.

Apple Intelligence also summarizes emails either in the inbox or in the email itself. You can see in the left image the message between Patrick and Andrew has been summarized. The middle image is the original email when opened. The right email I clicked summarize, and you can see it summarized the text of several emails to a quick summary.

Image Playground found on iPhone, iPad, and Mac is a fun way to generate images from text. You can see the prompt I wrote below:

You can see it did a pretty good job.

I changed my prompt and you can see the result.

I really wanted a panda with googles and swim caps. This generation also put in lane lines which would be present in a swimming competition.
Genmoji is a fun way to create your own Emojis to use in texts. There are two ways to get to Genmoji. First open Messages. Then either hit the plus on the bottom left of the screen to open the drop down menu where you can select Genmoji, or click on the emoji icon and then select Genmoji on the top right of the pop menu.
You can see on the left the prompt I chose "Panda wearing swim google and swim cap" and the resulting Genmoji which I can now use.

Don't you hate when someone walks into your photo. Now can can remove them. Click on the bottom of your photo and click on the sliders to edit your photo. Click on the Clean Up button and color in what you want to remove (it will be pretty white/rainbow brush). Clean up also sometimes selects what it thinks you want to remove for you and highlights it. You can see in the far right image below the person was removed.

There is also an Enhanced Photo App search. Click on the blue magnifying glass to open the search pane. I chose to search my images for "Dogs in the Snow". You can see in the right image it did a pretty good job.

The Photos App also has Visual Look up. You can seen in the left image, in the bottom of the screen there is an either an i or circle image with plant, animal or other. Click on it and brings up an identificaiton pane telling you what it is. In my case, the photo was of Poison Ivy.

You can see in the left image, Photos already knows that I might want to identify the type of dog. You can see the icon in the bottom left and on the dog's nose. In the right panel, you can see that it thinks that she is either a poodle or labradoodle. This is pretty good since she is 75% poodle and 25% lab.

Photos also has a Memory Movie Mode. By scrolling down below you photos you will see collections such as Recent Days, People and Pets, Pinned Collections, and Memories.
By clicking Create, you will get an Apple Intelligence field to select what you want. I chose Dogs. In the right image you can what it looks like when it starts to think and choose. your photos for your movie
In my presentation, I played the video created with pictures of both my dog as well as other dogs I have in my pictures.

Siri is a powerful assistant found in your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. In the iPhone , if it is enabled, can be opened three ways. You can talk to it "Hey, Siri," long click the side button (not double click) or tap the bottom middle of your screen.

Once Siri is activated, you can tell by the rainbow highlight around the perimeter of the screen or the Siri text bar on the screen. Siri is your personal assistant. Ask it information or to do things like open and application or find something.

Apple Intelligence is extremely useful to transcribe Audio recordings in Notes or Voice Memos. In my presentation, I showed a screen recording on how it works giving transcriptions.

Apple Intelligence is also in Final Cut Pro. Image Playground is now incorporated into Final Cut Pro.

Final Cut Pro also now has Magnetic Mask and Auto Captions which is extremely useful for video editors. The Magnetic Mask creates a mask that automatically tracks the objects movement across the screen. Such a time saver for those who do video work. Final Cut now has the ability to auto generate captions. This is found in the Edit menu. I need to scroll down the edit options to find Captions, to activate the useful tool. In my presentation, I showed two videos use this amazing tools.

Thank you looking at my tour of Apple Intelligence. There are always new ways it is added. Please check out Apple's Website for more information. If you have any questions. Please feel free to reach out - Michael.clear@icloud.com

Wow - extensive and so helpful Michael - I’m bookmarking this post!

I like how you start with a good explanation of hardware and software requirements -always good to know - and then take us step by step through the AI tools that we might take advantage of on our Apple devices.

And the plethora of Pandas is great - so thank your daughter for her inspiration - nice way to take us through all the possibilities.
