Using Apple Classroom as a formative assessment tool allows teachers to check student understanding in real time while keeping students comfortable and supported. By viewing all student screens and having them respond through Keynote slides, teachers can quickly gauge comprehension without calling anyone out publicly. This approach gives every student a chance to participate, reduces the fear of being exposed in front of their peers, and helps build confidence as they learn.
Inviting students into your Apple Classroom is super easy! First, use the + to create a class name. Once you are in your class, select the blue "Invite Students" button. I airplay my iPad at this point and students will see an invitation to join your class along with a Class Code. When all students have joined your class, select "Add" in the top right and you're ready to go!
To create a quick and easy formative assessment tool for you and your students go to Keynote. Create a slide deck with the appropriate choices for your assessment. For example, each slide represents a possible answer. Along with the answer options, give each slide a distinct color. This makes it quick and easy for you to quickly identify the correct and incorrect answers. As you can see below, I have assigned each slide A, B, C, D as well as slides for True and False. I like to also add a "Thinking..." slide. Encourage students to go back to this slide in between each question to allow them wait time to consider the new answer.
Now, as students work in Keynote, you open your Apple Classroom and view all student screens by clicking on the 4 dots in the top right toolbar. Ask your questions, and watch your students respond! Depending on their responses, you know quickly whether you can move on or if certain topics need to be retaught.
