For writing, Pages writing journals have been very helpful templates for students to brainstorm, organize and produce their writing. Plus all the wonderful elements that can be included and publishing opportunities.
In designing this informational journal, shapes were used to create pull tabs that could be hidden in the margins. These were out of the way to keep a clean design and focus on writing, but offered supports to students who might need it. In Pages, whatever is off the side of the page will not be visible, naturally hiding the majority of the pull tab.
Steps to Create a Pull Tab
- Design page for template to suit your needs
- Group and then Lock all items that you do not want altered.
- Select a shape- For ease a rectangle works well
- Move the shape to the left or right margin, remember to leave part that the learner can access.

This is brilliant and so clearly presented! I can think of a multitude of ways educators could include "pull tab scaffolds" in their instructional content and still keep the workspace clean and organized for the user.
And the sharing of your writing journal template is a valuable resource for any educator supporting the student writing process. Thank you so much for sharing!
