LOOKING FOR GIRLS AND BOYS! Did you see them?

In the first grade, we are exploring and discovering about ourselves. It’s too important at an early age to improve a lot of skills such as socialization, communication and self confidence.

So, I created a funny activity for the learners. How can we improve our learning in a significant way? As an apple teacher, we are always looking for new experiences and ideas of learning processes, so in an automatic way I thought about  including technology. But, how could it be more significant?

I did look around at the classroom and I did realize over that library. Of course! I thought, Magazines! I tried to improve my activity with that kind of print media, so the learners would explore first something that they are not familiar with. And it was a great idea in my planning sequence. I will tell you why.

At first, I introduced the topic about “Me”. I asked learner by learner, are you a boy or girl? Then I explain the activity.I asked to explore the magazines, until they find illustrations of girls and boys. I saw every child immersed into the pages. “Look at the girl!” “I found a boy!” What is he doing? I asked. We found children at school, at the playground, and it was a good way to review our actual vocabulary.

Then, I gave them their IPads and I asked them to take photos. They were improving their 21st century skills, and were too entertained to explore the apps as Photos, Camera and finally, Freeform. The final product was to make a collage. Learners could improve their skills to create and inspire.
