Learning with iPad - Plan what they watch, craft what they learn

Context

As teachers we are so lucky to have so many resources to turn to for teaching. Many of us would turn to video resources as they are aplenty and engaging.  But being spoilt for choices also poses another challenge as many videos are either too long or only certain parts are relevant.  And when a video is too long, the students may bored or distracted what to focus.  Hence to make learning more targeted, we can use a web app Edpuzzle to help us. Through this app, we are able to insert questions along the video that could check students’ learning and give them feedback

Preparation and Flow

To prepare for this, teacher can sign up for free account with Edpuzzle.

1.  Select from a huge video library from various platform.

2.  Choose a video of your choice.

3.  You may do the following to the videos to make learning more targeted

-  Crop the video to the section you need

-  You can insert 3 types of questions along the video including multiple choice, open ended question and a note.

-  Collect students’ responses as they watch.  Hence the video can become an ‘assignment’ as students watch and answer questions along the way.

Possible Extension

Using videos while embedding activities and questions for students to do keeps them accountable and increases the engagement factor. This can also be integrated with a Learning Management System such as Google Classroom, where you can track student compliance, answers and performance. Simply a simple and great way enhance learning experience not just for the humanities but other subjects and contexts as well.
